Galapagos Islands

Directly opposite the coast of Ecuador, 1000 kilometers into the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are one of the world’s most unique and extraordinary places. A natural paradise where you find yourself magically transported to eras far bygone….

This volcanic archipelago consists of 14 major islands and over 60 smaller islands, islets and rocks, dispersed over a large ocean surface. This archipelago forms the Galapagos Marine Reserve. Galapagos is the first natural area in the world to be declared a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The islands are geologically young and rose from the bottom of the Pacific as result of submarine volcanic activity. The Galapagos are also at a crossroads of distinct marine currents, a cold one, coming from the south, originating from sub-Antarctic waters, the South Equatorial Current, popularly known as the Humboldt Current and a warm one, coming from the north, originating from tropical waters in the eastern Pacific, the Northern Equatorial Current; the combination of oceanic currents, the island’s geological nature and their oceanic isolation account for the existence on their waters and land surfaces of unique species of fauna and flora, which are not found anywhere else on earth.
